Winter Birthday? No Problem With These Four Ideas!

Take Me To Post Comment Form

Winter in the windy city, especially toward the end, can be annoying. The cold snaps and polar vortexes conspire to keep everyone inside, which is hard if you happen to have a winter birthday. But it shouldn’t be this way – Chicagoans are a resilient bunch, and a little bad weather can’t stop people from having fun. There are plenty of fun things to do during the winter for your birthday; they just take a little thinking outside of the box. Here’s a list of four fun winter ideas to help make your birthday party a night to remember.

Axe Throwing

If you’re the kind of person who likes to mix competition and badassery into their birthday, you should go axe throwing for your party at BATL (Backyard Axe Throwing League), where you can rent private lanes for a party, complete with instructions on how to throw an axe and a round robin tournament. Since axe throwing is indoors, there’s no worrying about the weather outside. It also makes for a great photo opportunity – there are few things more “Instagramable” than wielding an axe.

Ice Skating

If you do choose to brave the cold weather (good on you), you’ll want to be doing some kind of physical activity to keep warm, and ice-skating in Millennium Park , at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink is just the thing. You get a great backdrop of the skyline, and you get to show off your moves (or lack thereof) on the ice. Just make sure to cover your extremities – mittens, beanie, scarf – as gliding through the cold air can have a biting effect.

Chicago is, in many ways, the center of comedy in America, and on a cold evening you can’t go wrong watching a show, whether it’s stand up or sketch. Aside from the always popular (and a little touristy) Second City, there’s the iO Theater, the ComedySportz Theatre and the UP Comedy Club, each of which offer fine acts all through the winter. Plus, if you haven’t left the couch much this winter, you’ll be happy to know that laughing actually burns calories.

The Good Old House Party

Of course, in conjunction with any of the above, you’ve got to throw a good old-fashioned house party (or apartment party, as the case might be!). You could start your evening at axe throwing, then move the party back to your place to have a few drinks and play a few tunes. There’s something uniquely comforting in the winter about congregating with friends to just shoot the breeze over beers. And if you want to liven things up, why don’t you go ahead and make it a theme or costume party – running with the axe throwing idea, you could dress up like woodsmen for a flannel party. The possibilities are limitless.

This winter, don’t just skip your birthday because of the lousy weather – get out and celebrate. Use these four ideas to throw the ultimate winter birthday party.
