Cry me a deeper channel

So the White House says funding for dredging the Savannah River can't start until there is a change in an authorization bill concerning development of water resources. And area lawmakers say that's not true, that moving the project from a proposal to an active list made the development authorization unnecessary. And the governor says he wants the state to start work with state money even without federal money. And the White House says the state can't even do that because of the lack of authorization. And environmentalists see the standoff as a boon because anything that delays construction gives them hope that the project can be killed. And the people say, "What? Can't ya'all do anything?" And on top of all that there have been reports of problems with the project to deepen the Panama Canal, which has been one of the main justifications for wanting a deeper channel to the Port of Savannah. What are we to think?

October 23, 2012
Did the presidential candidates even mention Europe in their "foreign policy" debate Monday night? It seems national politicians have always paid little notice of some areas; Africa, South America, Australia. But I can't ever remember Europe being ignored. You'd think the president would at least try to compare our economy ...

Fun at Driver Services
January 27, 2012
My driver's license expired this past week and dread set in when I saw I was not going to be able to renew it online. It seems everything you hear about going to a Department of Driver Services office is bad; long lines, long waits, rude clerks, etc. And my ...

When it 'inkles' outside
January 09, 2012
Saturday, while watching a measly few rain drops ripple a rapidly drying up pond on the Isle of Wight, I realized our language doesn't describe light rains very well. We have lots of words for heavy rains; deluge, downpour, cats and dogs, wall of water, gully washer to name just ...
